PM Najib a 'friend of Australia'

That's what Australian premier Julia Gillard called Malaysia's prime minister who is on an official visit Down Under.

CANBERRA: Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard yesterday described Datuk Seri Najib Razak as a friend of Australia and a leader in the region. Her remarks came at a joint press conference after both had participated in restricted and bilateral meetings where relationships and partnerships involving both countries were discussed. "The prime minister is a friend of Australia and a leader in the region," she said.

Najib is on a three-day official visit to Australia at the invitation of Gillard to reciprocate her visit to Malaysia last year.

At a luncheon hosted by her in conjunction with Najib's visit, Gillard described Najib as exemplary in the fight against extremism and upholding the true values of Islam. "And I salute your leadership of the Global Movement of the Moderates." Gillard pointed out that Najib's visit to Australia was a milestone in the long friendship between Australia and Malaysia. "I thank you for making this journey, a journey of understanding, dialogue and cooperation."

Gillard also pointed out that Najib's visit came soon after her visit to Malaysia last year. "I want to thank you for your concern that you were not able to meet me at that time, and for taking the time to telephone (me).

"In choosing Malaysia as the first regional country to make a bilateral visit as prime minister, I wanted to signal just how much we valued the relationship with Malaysia." Gillard said she wanted to reaffirm Australia's deep and principled commitment to regional engagement. She also lauded their achievements as "partners and friends.
