LABIS: Pas' former Perak menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin on Wednesday night told an audience at Pekan Ayer Panas near here that voting for an Umno candidate is a sin.
Nizar, who was campaigning for the Tenang by-election, had prior to making the declaration went on a tirade against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the Barisan Nasional government, accusing them of corruption and abuse of power.
He said Muslim constituents of Tenang were compelled by their religion to vote for Pas' candidate, Normala Sudirman.
"In the context of syariah law, it is now wajib (compulsory) for us to support Cikgu Mala (Normala, who is a former teacher) and haram (a sin) for us to support Umno.
"It is haram under syariah law (to support Umno) because Umno had seized power...," Nizar said in reference to the collapse of the Perak government led by an alliance of Pas, DAP and PKR two years ago.
The Pas function was attended by about 200 people, mostly from the Malay dominated villages in the vicinity of Pekan Ayer Panas.
Pas campaigners in Tenang had repeatedly used Islamic laws and the setting up of an Islamic state as their main selling point at their functions held at Malay majority areas here.
At a function in Felda Cempelak Barat on Jan 10, Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Johor Pas commissioner Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed and Normala had extolled the virtues of Islamic state and law.
