KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will study the possibility of using two mediums of instruction in the teaching of Science and Mathematics in schools.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said some quarters were urging for the two subjects to continue being taught in English even though the Cabinet had in 2009 decided to reverse the policy of teaching Science and Mathematics from English (better known as PPSMI) to Bahasa Malaysia.
“We will consider the Prime Minister's views and what can be done to fulfil the wish of certain groups,” he told reporters after presenting awards to the top Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia scorers at a ceremony held at the Malaysian Examination Syndicate in Jalan Duta here yesterday.
Muhyiddin was commenting on a statement by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that the Government would study the possibility of using two mediums of instruction in the teaching of Science and Mathematics in schools.
Najib, who had a meeting with his Facebook friends in Penang on Saturday, was asked to consider reverting to the PPSMI policy.
When asked how soon the Government would come up with a decision on the policy, Muhyiddin said: “It will take time as we have to study the various aspects and implications of the decision we had made previously.”
Since the reversal in policy, there have been many letters to The Star from the public, asking the Government to reconsider its decision.
At another function in Putrajaya yesterday, Muhyiddin said the Government was making serious efforts to translate learning materials to achieve the twin aim of upholding the national language while strengthening the command of English among the people.
“Malaysians generally are able to speak good English but we should accept the reality there are those among us who are without the same capability,” he said when launching 100 Science and Mathematics translation titles by the National Institute of Translation here.
