THE announcement by the education minister of having a dual medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics is welcome. English is the most pragmatic language for Science and Mathematics. These fields are very dynamic and few other languages can cope with their advancements and developments.
Should we persist in continuing with Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction in national schools (and vernacular languages in vernacular schools) in the teaching of these two subjects, we would be putting the brakes on our children advancing towards mastering these two subjects.
The government's move is laudable; it shows its willingness to listen to the people.
Such changes impose an additional burden on every stakeholder of the education system, that is, students, parents, authorities, professionals and academicians, potential employers of these students, schools and textbook publishers.
These may be early days and the Education Ministry may find solutions to problems arising from the dual medium of instruction for the subjects.
But the problems are real and may not be overcome satisfactorily if solutions are carried out on an ad-hoc or short-term basis.
However, we cannot afford to benchmark the progress of our education system by the inability of certain students to master the language used as the medium of instruction or the demands of certain groups who are prone to meddle in the education system for non-educational reasons.
Perhaps, therefore, with the re-acceptance of English as an alternative medium of instruction for the teaching of Mathematics and Science in schools, it may be an opportune time for education professionals and academicians to once and for all re-look and re-develop the curriculum for these two subjects.
Such developments must be comprehensive enough and good enough to meet the goals of our national education policy.
They should stand the test of time, even with the intense dynamism of the two subjects.
Any changes should be only on content rather than on principles.
Mathematics and Science are two critical subjects that will play a crucial role in determining how successful Malaysia will be.
Whether we forge ahead in our drive to economic prosperity depends on how far our children are facilitated towards acquiring knowledge in Science and Mathematics.
